Rugby took its first baby steps in Pune with the formation of KFANDRA ( Khare's Football & Rugby Academy ) in 2001 by Swapneel Khare with Surhud being appointed as Head Rugby coach. With the sport of rugby slowly gaining popularity in India it was thought that it would not be long before it became an officially recognised sport in Schools and Colleges across the country, thus was formed PDRFA ( Pune District Rugby Football Association ) in 2006.

In 2009 Kai Taraporevala provided an additional boost to Pune Rugby with his know how and funding. With rapid progress being made on all fronts but still much more needed to be done the need for a far more professional structure / set up was clearly felt and thus was formed RFS Pune in 2010.
